Have Great Looking Skin Over 40

Can we do anything to prevent the deep lines and dry skin from aging us prematurely? In our youth we felt our baby-soft skin was invincible, and we spent hours basking in the sun and tanning our bodies to a golden brown hue.

Now, some of us who are over 40 are paying dearly with skin that’s turning to leather before our very eyes. What can be done, if anything, to get back some of that youthful glow and elasticity?

We need to know that there are two types of aging that affects our skin – intrinsic (genes) and extrinsic (external reasons, such as exposure to the sun’s rays). While some deterioration of the skin goes along with the aging process, there are ways we can lessen its effects. These include:

  • Minimizing repetitive facial expressions – Frowning, smiling or raising your brows repeatedly can cause those deep furrows around your eyes and mouth and across your forehead.
  • Sleeping positions – Do you sleep with your face pressed into the pillow or with the side of your face resting on the pillow? If you do, chances are you’ll eventually discover “sleep lines” across your chin and cheeks. Try to sleep on your back to minimize this type of wrinkle.
  • If you smoke – quit – Smoking can cause unsightly lines and wrinkles, not to mention a yellowish, leathery texture to your skin. When you quit smoking the lines and unhealthy coloring and texture will immediately begin to disappear.
  • Wear sunscreen – Sunscreen should be worn daily and become part of your overall skin protection regime. Be sure you choose a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) protector and at least 15 or higher SPF.

While you can’t really do anything about the intrinsic (genetic) factors that contribute to aging skin, you can opt for a medical treatment such as dermabrasion, chemical peeling, botulinum or injectable fillers.

Newer treatments such as radiofrequency are taking the place of more invasive procedures like a complete facelift.

See a licensed dermatologist if you suffer anxiety over aging skin or just want to look and feel younger. There are newer and better treatment options becoming available all the time, and your dermatologist should be able to suggest a treatment for you and your type of skin.

Anti-Aging Skin Care

Anti aging skin care products have become very popular today; which is not surprising, since who doesn’t want to look young for ever?

One of the first things that comes to mind about anti aging skin care products is vitamin C based anti aging skin care products. These products work by enabling the synthesis of collagen (a structural protein that is found in skin). This category of anti aging skin care products is related to anti-oxidants.

Anti aging skin care products that are based on vitamin C are, however, posed with the danger of getting oxidised themselves (as they come into contact with air during their usage). So some anti aging skin care products are based on the derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive. However, the effectiveness of such anti aging skin care is not as much as it is for vitamin C based ant aging skin care products.

Besides vitamin C, vitamin E and lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble anti-oxidant that is found in human blood and helps in building resistance against infection. Vitamin E is also known to inhibit cancer. Liponic acid is known to combat the signs of aging very effectively by reversing the skin damage caused by the aging process.

Phytochemicals form the other category of anti aging skin care products. Phytochemical are special chemicals that are extracted from plants. There are a variety of phytochemicals that are in use today. Phytochemicals prevent occurrence of cancer of certain types; these include prostate cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer. That is why they find their place in anti aging skin care products.

Some B-vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 are also in use for anti aging skin care products.

The field of anti aging skin care products is vast and needs a lot of research. Though the currently available products are effective, they still have challenges to combat. Hopefully, these challenges will get resolved in due course and help get better and cheaper anti aging skin care products.

However, anti aging skin care products should be used only as a supplement to the natural ways of skin and body care. So, drinking a lot of water, getting a good night sleep, exercising regularly, maintaining healthy eating habits and keeping stress at bay are essential means of delaying the aging process.

How To Fight Facial Aging

Most of us who want to appear youthful well into our life are concerned with facial aging. After all, our face is what most people see and remember about us so we want it to look as good as it can. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help prevent our face from showing the ravages of time.

One thing you can do to keep your face young looking is to live a healthy lifestyle. Smoking, eating the wrong foods and stress can all add up to lines on your face. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables as the antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties of both will help keep down the wrinkles. Plus they will help with your overall health and keep you feeling great which is sure to put a smile on your face.

It’s well known that the rays of the sun are a major contributor to facial aging, in fact about 90% of your wrinkles come from sun damage. In addition to the wrinkles, sun damage can cause hyper pigmentation or dark spots on your face which make you look older. Try to use a sun block at all times, even if you won’t be directly laying in the sun.

Water is a key element in every cell in our body and drinking enough of it can help slow down facial aging. Getting enough plain water will help keep your skin hydrated and plumper looking as well as aid in the cellular processes of your body. But how much is enough? Experts say to get between 4 and 8 – 8 ounce glasses a day. Everyone is different so you’ll have to experiment to see what level you feel comfortable with, the key is to start drinking more of it if you aren’t already.

Free radicals are created by our body during it’s normal process, but unfortunately they are a major contributor to aging and disease. You can fight them off, however, with antioxidants like those found in fruits and vegetables. You can even apply fruit juices and other things that are high in antioxidants (like green tea, for example) directly to your skin. Take a supplement for added insurance just in case your daily diet isn’t giving you enough.

Getting enough sleep, as well as the position you sleep in is also important for a youthful looking face. Believe it or not, sleeping on your back can ease tension on your face and, thus, help to prevent wrinkles. Sleeping on your stomach or side, on the other hand, can cause creases and stretching of the skin that, over time can turn into permanent wrinkles. Getting enough sleep is important so that your body has time to cleanse and refresh which will make all your organs healthier, even your skin.

If you want to take even more drastic steps to fight facial aging, you might consider things like Botox and topical applications such as

-A as well as laser therapy or microdermabrasion. All these things, along with a good skin care routine can go a long way to keeping your face looking youthful.

Aging Skin

Our skin is the body’s largest organ and it serves to protect us in various ways. Your skin is an insulator that provides a certain degree of temperature regulation. Skin provides us with the sensation of touch and feel as well as the synthesis of Vitamin D and the protection of Vitamin B folates.

Our skin is the part of us that the world sees. Throughout time we have searched for ways to improve and enhance our skin. We’ve decorated it with tattoos and embellished it with body jewelry but these things do nothing to prevent or slow-down the aging process of our skin.

There are two basic ways to care for your skin that will actually deter the wrinkles and creases that come with aging. First there are artificial fixes such as cosmetic surgery and the use of products that contain chemicals which minimize the signs of aging. Then there are the natural ways of maintaining healthy skin that does not seem to age at the expected rate.

The natural ways to acquire and keep a youthful appearance are based on a healthy lifestyle. This includes getting enough sleep, exercising, eating the right foods and not smoking.

Everyone should have a daily skin-care routine, and depending on your skin type the routine will vary. Start by determining the type of skin you have.  There are four basic categories of skin:

1) Oily Skin – this skin type will present a shiny appearance and large pores are usually visible. Although cleaning is essential in eliminating excess oil it is important not to over-scrub because this can lead to a pimple outbreak. When washing use tepid water – not hot. Hot water can strip away needed moisture.  Always use noncomedpgenic (oil-free and won’t clog pores) moistures and sunscreen products.

2) Dry Skin – you will notice that dry skin is tight or rough feeling, and you may see flakes or scales. Dry skin is often reddish in color and itches. To care for dry skin use warm water when washing. Do not use strong soaps or any alcohol-based skin products.

3) Combination Skin – the T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin) is usually oily and the cheeks may be normal or even dry.  You will find many products available that are specially formulate for combination skin.

4) Normal Skin – a healthy glow is present and there is no redness or large pores visible. To maintain this strived for skin use products that maintain the natural water balance of the skin.

Skin care is a must, determine your skin type and get in the daily habit of caring for your skin.  Proper care of the skin will help to ensure a youthful appearance – even after your youthful years are gone!
